LANAP success rate

It is estimated that about 40% of all American adults suffer from gum disease (periodontitis). Symptoms of gum disease range from mild gum inflammation to extreme tooth and bone loss. The negative effects of gum disease aren’t just isolated to the mouth. Recent studies indicate that gum disease contributes to worrisome health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.

As periodontists, we always look for new and better methods of treating and reversing gum disease. It is in this spirit that we began investigating the success of LANAP laser treatment over 10 years ago. Since that time, we have witnessed first-hand the immense benefits that LANAP provides for our patients.

LANAP success rate

While the exact LANAP success rate is unknown, recent scientific studies indicate that LANAP is a successful treatment for gum disease in the vast majority of cases. A 2022 study concluded that “LANAP® was an effective, minimally invasive, laser surgical therapy for moderate to advanced periodontitis.” Histology published in 2007 shows the positive impact that LANAP treatment has on gum disease and teeth and gum health in general.

Not all laser treatments are the same

It’s important to note that the successful results cited above do not apply to all laser dental treatments. The LANAP protocol using the MVP-7 laser is the only FDA-approved laser treatment for gum disease. Millenium Dental Technologies, the creators of LANAP and the MVP-7 laser, state that LANAP is the “...only scientifically, research-proven methodology that results in true periodontal regeneration, new bone growth, and gum tissue reattachment.”

Benefits of LANAP laser treatment

Traditional periodontal surgery has been a successful gum disease treatment for decades, leading some people to question why LANAP is necessary at all. We offer both traditional periodontal surgery and LANAP treatment and believe that both treatments are essential.

Traditional periodontal surgery and LANAP treatment produce similarly positive results in the fight against gum disease. LANAP, however, is noninvasive, involves less pain for the patient, and allows for much faster recovery time. Many patients return to their normal schedules just days after receiving LANAP treatment.

LANAP is particularly beneficial for patients who have a fear of dental treatment. These patients typically will not pursue surgery due to their fear of the scalpel and suture techniques used in traditional periodontal treatment. LANAP does not involve any cutting or sewing of the gum tissue and provides effective periodontitis treatment for those who shy away from more invasive dental procedures.

What is LANAP treatment specifically

LANAP is a minimally invasive treatment for gum disease that employs a laser to target and remove bacteria and infected tissue below the gumline. LANAP produces less bleeding and pain and allows for faster recovery than traditional periodontal surgery. It also has the potential to stimulate tissue and bone regeneration.
