Gingivectomy Cost

The gingivectomy procedure involves the removal of excess gum tissue, either as part of a periodontal disease treatment plan or for cosmetic reasons to aesthetically improve a patient’s smile.

There are two main kinds of gingivectomy. The first and more traditional type uses a scalpel and sutures, while the second type is performed with a specialized dental laser. In most instances, the laser gingivectomy is more expensive but offers faster recovery time.

How much does a gingivectomy cost?

Gingivectomy cost can vary depending on several factors. Typically, however, a gingivectomy costs between $200 and $500 per tooth. In some instances, cost savings are applied if the procedure involves a large section or entirety of the mouth.

What factors affect gingivectomy cost?

Reason for the gingivectomy procedure

If you have dental insurance, it is important to determine whether you need the gingivectomy procedure for health or cosmetic reasons. Gingivectomy is performed as a necessary treatment for periodontal disease or as an “elective” cosmetic procedure for patients with a gummy smile.

In general, your dental insurance will cover at least a portion of the gingivectomy cost if you receive the procedure as part of your treatment for periodontal disease. However, dental insurance typically does not cover elective procedures performed to improve the looks of a patient’s smile.

Type of gingivectomy procedure

As mentioned, the gingivectomy procedure can be performed with a scalpel and sutures or with a dental laser. The laser method involves using a sophisticated and expensive dental laser. As a result, the laser gingivectomy is often more expensive than the traditional gingivectomy. Many patients feel that the extra cost is warranted because the laser method tends to involve less pain and produce faster recovery.

Extent of the treatment

The gingivectomy procedure can be performed on just one tooth, a few teeth, a large section of the mouth, or the entire mouth. Depending on the extent of your treatment, the cost of your gingivectomy may increase.

Experience level of your periodontist

Not all periodontists are the same. Some doctors have extensive training and experience performing the gingivectomy procedure, while others are still perfecting their skills. Our periodontists have over 30 years of experience successfully performing the gingivectomy procedure and a decade of experience using dental laser technology.
